How to project onto the ceiling

Lie back and watch a film on the ceiling. With a projector on a turning stand it takes two minutes.

Projector in a dark bedroom tilted up towards the ceiling

What you need

  • A projector with a tilting stand. Every Visyon model turns through 180° in its stand.
  • A flat, light-coloured ceiling area without a light fitting in the middle.
  • A stable surface: a bedside table, a shelf or the floor beside the bed.

Step by step

  1. Place the projector on a stable surface beside or behind the bed, with the vents clear.
  2. Turn the body in its stand until the lens points at the ceiling above where you'll lie.
  3. Square the picture. The more the projector leans, the more the picture becomes a trapezoid. Use keystone correction (automatic on Turn 1 and HY300 Ultra) or move the projector so it points more directly up.
  4. Focus with something on screen that has text, until the words are sharp.
  5. Flip the picture if needed. If the picture is upside down from where you lie, open the projector settings and change the projection mode, or turn the projector round on its surface.
  6. Sort the sound. Pair Bluetooth headphones or a small speaker near your head; sound coming from the floor feels far away.

Picture size on the ceiling

A standard UK ceiling is about 2.3 to 2.4 m high. A projector on a bedside table is around 1.7 to 1.9 m from the ceiling, which gives a picture of roughly 50 to 70 inches with a typical mini projector. That's plenty when you're lying down. See screen size and distance.

Safety

  • Never cover the vents with bedding, and keep the projector off soft surfaces.
  • Make sure it can't fall onto the bed; keep cables away from where people walk.
  • Don't look into the lens while it's on, especially children.
Tip: turn on a sleep timer if your projector or app has one, so it switches off if you fall asleep.
